What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical intervention designed to decrease the size of the breasts. The procedure involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. This not only reduces breast size but also reshapes the breasts, resulting in a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing bustline.

When is breast reduction done?

Breast reduction surgery is typically recommended for individuals who face health issues and emotional distress due to the size of their breasts. Common reasons for pursuing this procedure include:

  • Physical discomfort: Large breasts can lead to chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain. Breast reduction can provide relief from these discomforts.
  • Skin irritation: The weight and friction of large breasts can lead to skin irritation and rashes underneath the breast crease.
  • Difficulty with physical activity: Engaging in physical activities or exercise can be challenging for individuals with oversized breasts. Breast reduction can enhance mobility and participation in various activities.
  • Emotional well-being: Some people may experience self-esteem issues or negative body image due to the size of their breasts. Breast reduction can boost self-confidence and overall well-being.

In some cases, insurance may cover breast reduction when deemed medically necessary – which it often is. When the condition leads to back and neck pain, rashes, and other problems, it may be covered.

The breast reduction procedure?

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a state-of-the-art hospital facility. The pattern of these incision varies depending on the degree of reduction needed and the patient's anatomy. Common techniques include a circular pattern around the areola, a keyhole-shaped pattern around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, or an inverted T or anchor-shaped incision pattern. Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to reduce the size of each breast. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a more natural position with an aesthetic size and shape. The incisions are brought together to reshape the smaller breast. Sutures and adhesives are used to close the incisions. All sutures dissolve by themselves. Drains are typically not required for breast reduction surgery

Recovery from breast reduction

Breast reduction is typically performed as outpatient surgery, with patients going home the same day. Patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which generally subside within a week. Patients will need to avoid any incisions getting wet for two days. It is advisable to take time off work and limit physical activity during the initial stages of recovery.

A surgical brassiere is to be worn for a few weeks. Gradually, patients can resume normal activities and exercise. Dr. Davidson and his team provide detailed aftercare instructions and are committed to supporting you throughout the recovery process to ensure a smooth and comfortable healing journey.
