What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue. This can occur due to various factors, including hormonal imbalances, obesity, or as a side effect of certain medications. Gynecomastia correction aims to reduce the size of the male breasts and provide a more masculine chest contour.

When is gynecomastia correction done?

Gynecomastia correction surgery is recommended for individuals who face physical discomfort and emotional distress due to the appearance of the upper chest due to an excess of breast tissue, that is not caused by a revisable medical issue. Ideal candidates for gynecomastia correction are individuals who are physically healthy and do not smoke. Male breast tissue may persist after puberty into adolescence, and excess chest tissue can also occur with changes in weight and age.  Common reasons for pursuing correction include:

  • Physical discomfort: Enlarged male breasts can lead to chronic back and neck pain, as well as discomfort during physical activities.
  • Emotional well-being: Some individuals may experience self-esteem issues or negative body image due to gynecomastia. Gynecomastia correction can boost self-confidence and overall well-being.

Recovery from gynecomastia correction

Gynecomastia correction is typically performed as outpatient surgery, with patients going home the same day. Patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which generally subside within a week. Patients will need to avoid any incisions getting wet for two days. It is advisable to take time off work and limit physical activity during the initial stages of recovery.  A compression garment is recommended under clothing for a few weeks. Gradually, patients can resume normal activities and exercise. Dr. Davidson and his team provide detailed aftercare instructions and are committed to supporting you throughout the recovery process to ensure a smooth and comfortable healing journey.
